There are 3 responses to help cover the crisis; Business as usual, Multi-energy solution and energy conservation. The business as usual scenario involve the world to keep using the fossil fuels and the International Energy Agency predicts that fossil fuels will still dominate energy into 2030, which cancels out the predictions of fossil fuels running out by then with the growing population and the rapid development of nations such as China and India.This solution would involve natural gas consumption doubling and oil to increase by 1. 4 billion barrels a day. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to this solution. One advantage is that that development will continue without constraints which mean countries won’t have to spend time and money on developing any sustainable solutions, they can just continue with fossil fuels and deve lop as nations which would increase economic growth and the wealth of the countries would increase.Another advantage would include that it is very costly to switch to a sustainable solution because the energy will need to be collected and stored and would need to be implemented around the whole country which costs a lot, and for developing nations this would mean that they can’t use that money for better purposes. Disadvantages would include fuel cost increasing. Because of the growing demand from developing nations and the increasing populations within countries, this would mean a higher price because supply is running out so eventually only the rich countries would be able to afford the oil.Also, as it is such a necessity good, consumers are willing to pay any price to get the oil or resource. Another disadvantage is that global warming would accelerate faster. With this response, more fossil fuels are being burnt, hence increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air wh ich would enhance the greenhouse effect. The second possible solution is Multi-Energy Solution which is meeting future energy demands from a mixture of renewable, recyclable and non renewable sources.This would mean countries would have energy security to maintain an affordable supply for people and industry. Some advantages of this solution are that the country is not dependent on one type of source meaning that its energy secure. For example, wind power is useful for windy places but if for some days there is a lack of wind, people won’t have energy, so the country could use solar or nuclear energy to support their needs.Another advantage would be using enough of the fossil fuels now, while developing the new type of sustainable renewable sources which will be very useful, thus creating jobs into that type of research and development. Disadvantages would include renewable energy has its costs such as it is very expensive to build and maintain, collecting and storing the ene rgy is difficult and it is very inconsistent. This type of energy would include solar and wind power, so they might not choose to use it when it is still developing as a type of sustainable source of energy which would ensure security.If a country is using nuclear power, then it could be very dangerous as the storing of the waste would become expensive and might harm the surrounding environment. Although it is a very reliable energy source, countries are unlikely to use it because of Chernobyl and if that happened today, the effects will be much worse. The last possible solution is Energy conservation which is a response to meeting the increasing demand based on decreasing the amount of energy we use.Reasons why they would want to reduce consumption are based on reducing costs, reducing harmful emissions and promoting energy security. Advantages are that it will satisfy environmentalists because they would be using sustainable solutions and cutting down on fossil fuels which would d ecelerate the greenhouse effect. Another possible advantage is that renewable energy would develop as the main source of energy countries would use, which means not using fossil fuels and so unnatural weather patterns and disasters won’t occur.Some disadvantages are that the transition from non-renewable to renewable is very expensive as installation, storing and distributing the power will all cost money and could be very unreliable at the start meaning countries won’t be energy secure. Also, countries will reject the plea of changing to renewable energy sources as they will want to develop as nations like we did and would want to have the industrial revolution and use up as much as they can to grow the country economically.

Debate on School Prayer Essays Debate on School Prayer Essay Debate on School Prayer Essay The School Prayer Debate William Scanlon PHI200 Mind and Machine Instructor Jon Stern July 20, 2011 One of the most hotly debated topics in the last fifty years is whether or not prayer in public schools should be allowed; a simple question which gives rise to many complicated and emotional answers. The most basic dispute is the separation of church and state. As reiterated in a 1962 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Eagel v. Vitale, the court ruled that public schools were not empowered to condone school prayer and in fact that school prayer was unconstitutional(Dierenfield,2007). The case was brought about by families of public school students who complained that the voluntary prayer, â€Å"Almighty God,† was a contradiction to their beliefs. The prayer went simply, â€Å"Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon thee, and we beg thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teacher, and our country. Amen. †(Murray,2010) The complaint argued that beginning the school day with this prayer violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution which states, â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. † The constitutionality of the prayer had been upheld the N. Y. State Appeasl (Smith,1987). Not ironically perhaps because the prayer had been written and approved by the N. Y. Board of Regents. It ruled the opinion of the Supreme Court was that a government authorized prayer could not be made mandatory to be recited in a public school. The Court further went on to reinstate how important the Separation of Church and State is. They went on to explain that prayer is a religious activity and thus violated the establishment clause. Hence the prayer written by a government agency to encourage religious belief was not permissible according to the Constitution. Many lawsuits on the same subject ensued. In subsequent cases though, the Supreme Court has been consistent in its rulings. It has prohibited readings from the Bible, forbidden the Lord’s Prayer, and has even ruled that prayers at public school sporting events and graduations were unconstitutional (Ravitch 2001). The debate rages on with each case and ruling. A situation which may never be settled or compromised is Religion and belief in a God is one of the most emotional issues man has debated, fought about, and even died for over the centuries, The debate on school prayer will rage on and on and ultimately always come to a stalemate. This is partly due to the fact that the question of one’s own personal belief in God is at the core of the issue. Those in favor of prayer in school will say that praying in school will teach Religious tolerance(Majors,Cheri 2010). That it will instill and inspire children to question and seek answers about God and different Religions and to develop their own beliefs. Very often the argument For Prayer is that putting prayer back in school will reverse what is believed to be a moral decline in the country. Many believe that since school prayer has been banned, crime has increased, family values have deteriorated, and some zealots even predict that it is the forerunner to Armageddon, as America has lost its soul. Some believe that banning prayer actually deprives religious freedom as guaranteed in the Constitution. By prohibiting prayer it in turn promotes Non-Religion. That is to say without prayer in school it discourages a child from believing in any religion and gives a sense that praying at all is bad. On the other side, those against prayer in school feel that if it were allowed, religion would be forced upon students. They feel that school is there strictly for education and religion should not be part of it. Prayer promots emotional feelings and can give rise to religious discrimination of these opposing beliefs. Some go as far to say that prayer in school wastes time better spent focused on studies. Prayers are part of values learned at home and as such should remain there. Those against prayer will also say that schools allow enough free time for any religious observance. As the case against prayer in public school continues to be upheld by the courts, I have to admit that the side against prayer has the more logical argument. The Constitution guarantees a citizen the right to private prayer, but it does not force others to listen if they chose not to. I agree with the statement, â€Å"State supported prayer is not ‘Free Exercise’ its ‘Forced Religion. ’†(Dierenfield,2007) And that is why it is prohibited. Another fact I take credence in is that according to the U. S. Census church membership remained constant since 1960, before prayer in public school was banned. True morals in this country have declined since the Supreme Courts originally ruled, but I owe that more to the decline of Family Values. Due in part to changed in family dynamics as there are more and more single parents, as well as both parents being forced to work. The question of school prayer in public schools is indeed a philosophical one. I truly believe this debate will be never-ending. Just as people debate the existence of a God; there will always be more questions than answers to the issue. Exactly how prayer in school ultimately affects students is subject to interpretation. The matter cannot be judged or determined as a whole because young individual minds are a stake here. In my opinion I believe it is all the more important that individual rights and free thinking must be the main objective in teaching our children. We must continue to teach, not preach religion to young minds. Expose them to all the different cultures and religious beliefs there are. Show them that be it Christianity, Judaism, Muslim or any other religion, all promote goodwill and love. All are there for them to embrace and choose if they so desire. He is more afraid of what people think than Sadie is and sees the consequences of their relationship clearer. As a person Kevin can be described as calm, serious and hardworking He is kind and will not hurt a fly unless he is badly provoked. Kevin thinks that the fights between the Catholics and Protestants are unreasonable and unnecessary. Although Brain Rafferty betrays Kevin, Kevin stays loyal to his old friend. He does not give Brain away when the police accused him of owning the gun. Although Kevin and Sadie comes from different religions one can see they share most of their believes. They both believe they can be friends even if they belong to different religions. Mr Blake appears in a crucial point in the novel. He gives Kevin and Sadie hope and helps them in their relationship. He himself is a Catholic, but he did not care if people were Catholic or Protestant. He held no prejudice against those who had a different religion than his own. Mr Blake thinks of others before he thinks of himself. He fights for what he believes in and refuses to give into terrorism. People like Mr Blake and the Hendersons are ideal characters. Nevertheless, they are agreed that one does not become addicted simply because one â€Å"wants† to be addicted to something; there must be some underlying cause within a person’s life to quite literally â€Å"force† them into addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol, or anything else. Both essays state clearly that there must be some unhappiness or something on the whole that the person is lacking, that is then filled when the addiction is discovered. However, in reading both papers, while they present differing viewpoints on the issue of addiction, it is my belief that the more fair, just, and realistic attitude is expressed by Dr. Gabor Mate in his essay, â€Å"Embraced by the Needle†, because unlike Mr. Alexander, Dr. Mate end eavors to approach the issue of addiction by individual example with firsthand information, and not blaming society as a whole. The issue of addiction is thoroughly and repeatedly discussed from different viewpoints in both papers. Mr. Alexander tries to make the point that free-market societies are to blame for society’s ills and addictions, by treating them badly and displacing them, while Dr. Mate takes a more firsthand approach to the issue. Though Mr. Alexander cites many case histories throughout his essay, â€Å"Addiction in Free Markets†, they are always in the third person, and not one is backed by data or facts outside of his observations of the early 21st century and the historical nature of his work. Specifically discussed in â€Å"Addictions in Free Markets† are the plights of Native Americans to become easily addicted to alcohol, citing that society is to blame because it ‘dislocated’ them by making them leave their original tribal lan d. Mr. Alexander also states that before this â€Å"forced dislocation† had occurred, alcohol was rarely used or consumed by Native Americans, sometimes only in ceremonial purposes; therefore, the blame is on the free-market society that pushed the Native Americans from their land. In presenting this issue, Mr. Alexander does not quote one Native American, nor does he use scientific studies to back up his claims, thereby only presenting one issue and only one side of that issue. Though history sometimes speaks for itself, the voices of those living with the dislocation (even generations later) would have presented a more fair, and just, approach to the topic, as Dr. Mate presents in his paper by using firsthand quotes and case studies with his patients. Mr. Alexander also makes the point that â€Å"free-market societies universally dislocate their members, leading to mass addiction.† Can one action really doom a set of people? The answer is no. Each and every person is an individual, and therefore it is up to them how they deal with a set of circumstances. No two people are alike, and therefore cannot be expected to react or deal with a situation the same way. Much of Mr. Alexander’s essay focuses on the fact that because a certain group of people were dislocated or displaced, they were doomed from the outset, no matter what happened.
