Violence in the Media Violence in the media has been a growing problem ever since the emergence of mass media. One wonders however, how violence has become so prominent in our culture, more so than other countries. More minors are being involved in heinous crimes such as murders and armed robberies. Even play on the school ground is getting rougher. There are many factors that play into the increasing violence, such as over population, religious struggles, and race. Although they consider themselves the â€Å"kings of carbonation† (Cravens, 2009, p. 4, para. 3), in 1960 they began to diversify by purchasing Minute Maid and Belmont Spring Water Co. in addition to merging with Duncan Foods (â€Å"The Coca Cola Company†, 2005). Coke’s primary business model is to manufacture syrup and sell it at high profit margins to a large network of independent bottlers who in turn sell it to retail outlets. Although this model has helped them to show higher profit margins, it also worked to disguise financial troubles from debt and independent bottler relations (Cravens, 2009). Based on deceitful earnings facilitated by shady, yet legal, financial finagling, plus extraordinary income from buying and selling bottlers, Coke was able to exploit the exaggerated success of the business as exhibited both internally by a dysfunctional culture cultivated by a lingering false sense of success stemming from their glory years, and externally as a 3,500% increase of stock (Cravens, 2009) which in-turn stayed in decline between 1998 through 2007 (Coca Cola Historical Stock Prices, 2012). The profit margins attained during the glory years were predictably unsustainable; however the decline was not based only upon questionable business activities, but also changing consumer attitudes. Although consumer awareness between the diet-disease relationships really began to take hold in the 1980s with efforts by the American Heart Association (Teisl, 1999), due to the advent of the internet, by the mid-to-late 1990s consumers began to awaken to the health issues related to consumption of excessive sugar in the form of HFCS, and the dangers of aspartame (Fox, 2012). This has resulted in consumers moving away from â€Å"sugary, fizzy drinks in favor of drinks with a healthier image like water, teas and other noncarbonated beverages† (Soft Drink, 2010, para. 7) and carbonated beverage sales declining for the past six years (Fuhrman, 2011). Although the carbonated beverage industry is in decline the industry would rather divert your attention by telling you â€Å"the big news is not that the soft drinks category’s sales are down†¦but that Diet Coke surpassed Pepsi for the No. 2 brand in the category† (Fuhrman, 2011 para. 3). Digging further, the only reason Diet Coke took the number two spot is because its sales declined less the Pepsi’s did, and to add to that, this loss occurred in an overall loss of soda market share globally (Esterl, 2011). Both Coke and Diet Coke have shown decline sales. Why? The public is waking up to the dangers of HFCS and Aspartame, two key ingredients in regular and diet soft drinks. High Fructose Corn Syrup was invented in 1957 and was developed for mass production in Japan between 1965 to 1970 (â€Å"High Fructose Corn Syrup†: Production, n. d. ). HFCS is manufactured by extracting corn starch, processing further to produce corn syrup, then adding enzymes to convert glucose to fructose resulting in a mixture anywhere from 42% to 55% fructose (â€Å"High Fructose Corn Syrup†, n. d. ). The danger of corn syrup is due to increased quantity consumed versus ingestion through natural means by eating fruit or other foods containing fructose (Mercola, 2010). â€Å"Fructose is a major contributor to a) insulin resistance [diabetes]; b) elevated blood pressure; c) elevated triglycerides and elevated LDL [bad cholesterol]; d) epletion of vitamins and minerals; and e) cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis and gout† (Mercola, 2010, para. 3). In addition to previously mentioned health issues a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition further makes the connection of fructose to weight gain, and insulin resistance syndrome (Elliot, 2002). The body process different types of sugar in differ ent ways. Glucose, a much healthier form of energy, is processed mostly on a cellular level throughout the body, whereas fructose is processed completely in the liver and converts almost immediately into fat (Mercola, 2010). Although the corn syrup industry claims that at most, HFCS contains 55% fructose, independent researchers upon testing actual cans of soft drinks found they contained â€Å"as much as 65% fructose (and only 35% glucose)† (Kaplan, 2010, para. 6). According to the American Diabetes Association, Americans do spend $116 billion on direct medical costs related to diabetes, and with diabetes increasing by 176% between 1980 through 2010 (Crude and†¦, 2011), with fructose playing a major factor in the onset of diabetes someone is bound to take notice. Although HFCS has proven to be dangerous to consume, aspartame is worse (Mercola, 2011). Aspartame was created in 1965 by James Schlatter of the G. D. Searle Company, and took over 15 years to gain a very shady approval by the FDA (Mercola, 2011). Many researchers and top doctors have weighed in on the issue saying â€Å"aspartame causes headache, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma and cancer †¦ worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue and depression. †(NWV, 2004, para. 4). Board Certified Neurosurgeon, Russell Blaylock, MD wrote a book documenting the connection of aspartame to macular degeneration, diabetic blindness and glaucoma (NWV, 2004). Due to the brand’s value and customer loyalty the company has been able to rely on its core carbonated products, however as their dedicated customer base ages and dwindles they will find it harder to attract new younger consumers who are more aware of the health concerns of HFCS and aspartame. Miller also uses tragic themes to accompany the tragic elements already used in the play. These themes are love, loyalty, betrayal, honour, revenge, jealousy and death and through them is displayed the two cultures; one which used to be Sicilian but has been moulded over time conforming more to the American way of life but still rooted with Sicilian beliefs; the other being completely Sicilian. Marco and Rodolfo mainly come to America to avoid the depression which was leaving many people without jobs, money or food. The time in which the play was set, a depression was upon Italy, the land in the south and Sicily was so unproductive there was hunger everywhere as Marco described my wife she feeds [the children] from her own mouth. Reflection Communication Skills Essay Reflection: Communication Skills Essay A Simple Reflection To begin a reflection at a particular milestone, one should look into the mirror and look past the concrete image into what lies beyond. The particular milestone here is the completion of COMM 1015 and my progress over the semester is what lies beyond. Certainly, change is evident over my first semester of college; the debate here is whether the change is positive improvement or not. This has indeed been an enjoyable semester for me, but as I begin to gather up the ends of my first semester communication skills education, I will illustrate and reflect on my progress. Writing has always been one of my stronger suits, gliding with ease through English classes that others may find difficult. I have always been able to easily throw together a captive introduction, state a thesis, provide support, and conclude well. Even though it is very easy for me to develop a good piece of literature, there are still areas for improvement. I have never been very keen on the e ntire writing process until this year. I now use a quick brainstorm and free write to create a detailed outline making my papers much more logical and organized. Also the peer editing process is something that I have improved on greatly, learning to edit the papers’ of my classmates and taking their feedback to mind as well. I selected the nonverbal paragraph, speaker analysis, and common book essay as my personal best writings this semester because in all three I included the writing process and it helped me develop well organized, all-inclusive pieces of work that were fun to read. I also had them edited by Ms. Emilie and students taking all feedback and corrections into mind, effectively perfecting the writings. I am proud of them more simply because the assignment allowed me to put together my ideas in a unique way that I thought was interesting. I think my major weaknesses, though, fall more into reading comprehension and critical thinking. The structure of Ms. Emilie’s teaching helped my reading comprehension skills improve significantly through the course of the semester. Material was to be read from the book and a subsequent quiz would be provided to prove understanding of the material. I ended up doing very well on these quizzes illustrating my improvement throughout the class. These acquired skills helped in every other class where reading was necessary to capture certain material. Critical thinking came more subtly during the course. The group conflict project improved my critical thinking as I had to examine all of the aspects of my stakeholder to find solutions to the common problem. Also the conflict resolution letter incorporated critical thinking as I had to come to a mutual solution between two parties where neither takes a loss. In both cases, research was necessary to establish a common ground and find the solutions that work best for every party involved. I understand now, in detail, the ste ps to solving a conflict; stating the problem, analyzing the problem, brainstorming solutions and choosing the best one. I am now able to come to a plausible solution when faced with a conflict as opposed to a one-sided close-minded solution. My listening and communication skills have also greatly improved over the semester. I have never been a very effective communicator demonstrated through my weak relationships with my family and friends. The material in the textbook and the corresponding quizzes forced me to learn a ton of things I did not know about being an effective communicator. I learned how to use listening skills, nonverbal communication, feedback, and many more strategies to communicate appropriately with people. I also learned how to register feedback and make changes in the way I am communicating based on the message being communicated to me. The communication environment involving kinesics, occulesis, haptics, proxemics, chronemics, olfactory, and vocalics is mu ch more vivid to me as my knowledge

Google English spelling and youll get 23,300,000 hits. Visit a few of the sites and you will be told how ridiculous, crazy, outrageous, cruel, and in-need-of-reform is English orthography. English spelling is more complicated than that of some other languages, but its not total chaos. The strangest spellings are those of the commonest words, so practice soon familiarizes even young children with the most irregular forms. Overall, there are predictable patterns and rules to guide the spelling of most English words. It would be impossible to cover all the phonetic facts of English spelling in one article, so stand by for a sequence of articles (you can also check the spelling section on TeachingIdeas.co.uk, which sums up most of the rules). For starters, Id like to point out some aspects of the English alphabet that lead to misunderstandings about English orthography. The 26 letters of the English alphabet are insufficient to represent the 44 or so sounds used to speak the English language. Written English has compensated for this lack of letters by inventing extra letters to represent eight consonant sounds and seven vowel sounds that do not have letters of their own. For example, the combination sh does not represent the combined sounds of /s/ and /h/. The sound represented is /sh/, which is the sound heard at the beginning of the word ship. Written English has not just compensated, but overcompensated for its insufficient alphabet. Numerous alternate spellings exist to represent sounds already represented by letters or letter combinations. This overabundance of spellings is a result of Englishs unabashed habit of importing words from other languages. In many instances new words brought along the spelling conventions of the language of origin. Clearly English orthography requires more study than that of other modern languages. Keep in mind, however, that English grammar is simpler than most. You can use the time saved in studying the grammar to learn the spelling system! I hear a lot of people admit to being unable to spell as if it were a genetic defect. I suppose that in a tiny percentage of the population it may be. In general, however, poor spelling is the result of insufficient information. In sum: the English alphabet has 26 letters; spoken English uses 40+ speech sounds; written English makes use of 70 spelling symbols. English spelling is complex, but learning 70 phonograms (sound symbols) and a few rules is a small price to pay for the use of the enormous vocabulary of English. The ruling of the BC Supreme Court on physician-assisted suicide has recently banned the issues since it is considered unconstitutional and it can facilitate the relief and fear from the society (Yosie, 1). Moreover, there is a degree of acceptability in relation to medical practices, such as administering doses of pain medication for hastening death are accepted. In fact, the elimination of laws against physician-assisted suicide can offer a chance for some patients to end their struggle with incurable disease. There is a counter argument in relation to physician-assisted suicide, whereby if the laws against the issue were eliminated this would increase the vulnerability of members of the society like the aged, cognitively impaired and disabled. The other hand, the opponents of the resent BC decision are applying politically charged terms for expressing their concerns, though the truth lies in these extremes. Furthermore, physician-assisted suicide is not considered ultimate salvation for patients suffering from incurable diseases, and it is not a catalyst for mass murdering the elderly or cognitively impaired.
